Apple Picking with Babies

One of my favorite times of the year is apple-picking season. New England abounds with apple orchards, which can be the perfect place for a fun weekend family outing and photo opportunity. But if you have a baby or even a young toddler it’s important to pick the right atmosphere in order for everyone to truly enjoy the experience and avoid getting overwhelmed and overstimulated. If you are looking for a high-energy place with many activities, Boston-area orchards such as Belkin Family Lookout Farm and Shelburne Farm¬†are really great options. However, if you’d prefer to go somewhere on the quaint and quiet side a place like Carver Hill Orchard¬†will suit your family well.

Looking to find a low key orchard close to where you live? Here are a few tips to factor in:

-Avoid places that include extensive activity lists on their website. Orchards with hayrides, corn mazes, bounce houses, and live bands, etc. are often very crowded around this time of year and may be a bit loud for babies.
-Call ahead to find out how busy they are. Avoiding frustrating parking situations and long lines for apple bags and snacks can prove to be stressful rather than relaxing and fun.
-Don’t forget to bring your baby carrier, camera and cash! Apple orchards usually require a bit of walking so be sure to bring a backpack carrier of some sort (or rugged stroller if you have an older toddler). Click away as you pick–the apple and tree colors and apple tasting along the way really make for some priceless family photos. Finally, bring some cash with you just in case they don’t take credit cards at the various stands throughout the orchard.
